Safety first!
Every shooter has the personal responsibility to make sure that every bullet fired impacts safely in the impact berm/backstop. All shooting shall be initiated from a designated firing line at an approved target, placed in the proper location.
Safety Rules
All NRA Range Safety Rules are to be observed at all times. These will be included with individual range rules posted at each range
- ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
- ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
- ALWAYS keep the firearm unloaded, with actions open, until ready to use.
- Treat every firearm as if it were loaded at all times
- Know your target and what is beyond
- Know how to use the gun safely
- Be sure the gun is safe to operate
- Use only the correct ammunition for your gun
- Wear appropriate ear and eye protection
Additional Range Safety & Club Rules
- Firearms are NEVER to be handled or touched when people are in front of the firing line or down range. Before anyone goes forward of the firing line ALL firearms shall be made safe. Cylinders unloaded and/or magazines removed, chamber empty, action must be open and firearms shall remain lying on the bench or stand pointed in a safe direction until all persons are again behind the firing line.
- Never allow the muzzle of your firearm to be raised or aimed over the impact berm/backstop or safety berms. Shooting designated ammo at the shotgun clays area is an exception to this rule.
- The CEASE FIRE command or the siren/strobe light activation switch may be used by anyone. If cease fire/siren/strobe is used everyone must stop shooting at once, firearms shall be cleared and made safe. It is the member’s responsibility to verbally communicate with all other shooters at each range that is in use “cease firing” and the siren/strobe before going down range.
- Do not use target stand base (railroad ties) to prop targets and do not shoot at target stands or ground base supports.
- The use of incendiary, tracer, explosive, or armor-piercing ammunition is strictly prohibited on all KF&G property. The Chief Range Safety Officer may give special permission for the above use if needed.
- The practice of manually “Bump Firing” firearms or the use of inserted/attached mechanical or electrical trigger enhancement devices at KF&G is generally prohibited. Firing of firearms in a manner that is not within the intended design of that firearm’s system is prohibited at KF&G. Firing a firearm in a manner that does not assure controlled sighting and target acquisition or in an unsafe manner is prohibited. Any aftermarket mechanical or electrical device that is attached to or inserted into the trigger/trigger guard area for the purpose of manipulating the trigger and rate of fire that is not within the original design of the firearm is prohibited.
- Notification and approval from the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee is needed for all full auto firearms.
- There shall be no use of alcohol, illegal drugs, or other intoxicants of any kind on the Club ranges at any time. Any member, guest or event participant using any medication or intoxicant that might in any way impair his/her ability to shoot safely shall not use any firearms, air-guns or bows. This rule is meant to include the consumption of alcoholic beverages or the use of any other intoxicant on club property while an event is still in progress and the individual is still participating in any form or part of the event. Anyone violating this rule will be asked to leave the club property. Violating this rule could jeopardize the safety of individuals or cause damage to equipment or facilities.
- The use of Kennebunk fish & game facilities is limited to members and invited guests (limited to a maximum of 2 guests at one time), except as otherwise directed by the board of directors. Anyone using the facilities, including guests, is subject to the rules and regulations of the club. Members shall be with their guests and will be responsible for their actions and the actions of their guests at all times.
- Each member shall prominently display his/her membership badge while on club premises.
- Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on the KF&G ranges unless they are under the direct supervision of an adult who is a member and who shall be responsible for them. Dependent children or guests between 18-22 years of age shall not utilize the range without their parent club member, UNLESS they have been certified by an RSO as having attended a new member safety/orientation required by all new members. The dependent child must also be in possession and display their parents ID card.
- Anyone causing damage to Club property, equipment, or facilities shall be personally liable for such damage and shall be subject to Club discipline and/or criminal prosecution.
- The Club shall not be responsible for personal property or equipment left on club Premises.
- Use the appropriate size target, placed at eye level and/or proper height, to ensure that your shots strike the backstop and not the target holders. Clays can be used but, NO glass, cans, metal or targets that could cause injury to others may be used. When shooting into steel targets, stand back at least forty feet when shooting jacketed ammo.
- All brass should be swept or picked up after shooting and disposed of in the proper container. This includes all cartridge casings including shot shells or spent casings from any ammunition. Targets are to be picked up and properly disposed of when you are done shooting. Always try to carry home what you carried in. KEEP YOUR RANGES CLEAN.
- If you have a misfire, squib or a hang-fire, keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction down range. Do not open the chamber until waiting at least 30 seconds up to 60 seconds to be sure that the danger of a hang-fire has passed, then clear the chamber of that round and make it safe. When the firearm has been cleared and is in a safe condition, check the barrel for obstructions and the firearm for malfunctions before resuming firing.
- The Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee shall have full authority to act on any range safety issue in accordance with approved safety rules. Any member or guest shall immediately abide by any order of the Chief Range Safety Officer or his/her designee. Disagreements shall be brought to the attention of the Board of Directors for resolution. Range Safety Officers names are posted inside the club house are generally at most organized events. They can be identified by their bright yellow RSO hats.
- Shooting hours are Monday-Saturday 8:00am to after ½ after sunset. Sunday, is 12:00pm to 1/2/ hour after sunset. The BOD may allow an earlier start on Sunday for special club events or activities.
- Only 12 gauge or smaller shotgun caliber is permitted for use on the Shotgun field. Maximum shot size no larger than 7 ½ for lead and 7 for steel is allowed in the area designated for shooting clays. All Shotgun patterning should be completed on the 50-yard range.
- On the pistol range, use of center fire rifles cartridges and shotguns is prohibited *with the only exception being hand held (pistol) .410*
FAILURE TO ABIDE BY THESE RULES MAY RESULT IN A REPRIMAND OR YOUR REMOVAL FROM THE KENNEBUNK FISH & GAME CLUB.
